Samantha is happy to assist you with making any travel arrangements… Don’t hesitate to reach out to her via email or by phone.
Please arrive in Mayaguez no later than 3pm on your trip start date.

Arrival -
Arrive at the San Juan International Airport (SJU) and allow AT LEAST A ONE HOUR BUFFER to catch your Cape Air flight to Mayaguez. The No Name team will meet you out front of the airport. You will not miss us; walk out the double doors and we will be front and center ready to load up your gear. The shutttle transport from Mayaguez takes roughly 40 minutes.
*Please note ground transportation is available from San Juan or Aguadilla for an additional charge, and requires additional logisitcs to be worked out. Please connect with Samantha to arrange these options.
Upon arrival to the lodge, rooms will be assigned, head up to yours and freshen up after a day of travel and head down for dinner around 6 pm. For our last night, we will join the guide team and No Name staff and have dinner at a local friend’s restaurant. The downtown area of Boqueron is just a 5 minute walk from the lodge. Exit the lodge property via a private gate, cross the bridge from the marina the lodge is located in and enter the lively and vibrant downtown streets of Boqueron. This is an awesome way to immerse ourselves in the culture that Puerto Rico is known for!
The Fishing -
Cabo Rojo is a region located on Puerto Rico's Southwest coast, to the Southeast sits the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge. This area boasts a diverse ecosystem, with the coast lined by mangroves and coral reefs- the perfect hangout for tarpon and permit! To the Southwest, the Los Morrillos lighthouse overlooks limestone cliffs and Playa Sucia. In Puerto Rico, anglers are able to enjoy the perks of such a rich ecosystem and colorful culture.
- Tarpon -
Each morning, grab breakfast downstairs and then catch a ride to the boat ramp with your guide. The boat ride can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes, depending on what our guide team determines is best for the day. Tarpon are an aggressive species, and mostly are found in gin-clear water. Unlike many fishing locations in the states, Puerto Rican tarpon are less "spooky" when it comes to fly placement. Catch 15-40 pound fish on gurglers in the morning, and hunt larger cruising fish on classic tarpon patterns throughout the rest of the day. The island fetaures endless habitat for tarpon that have seen very few flies, in addition to the variety of fishing zones. This allows anglers to fish the most productive areas dependent upon seasons, weather conditions, and tidal movement.
- Permit -
Unlike the tarpon, Puerto Rican permit are just like every other region’s permit! Which is really what keeps us wanting to go after more permit... There are flats just a short boat ride out from the coastline that act as a barrier reef to Southern Puerto Rico. Depending on the tides and Conditions you will be targeting these fish either from the skiff, or on foot! Unlike other permit fisheries, walking on rocks and turtle grass while searching for tailing fish is truly a unique Puerto Rico experience. While they might not get as much pressure as other destinations, feeding these fish is still no walk in the park!! Instead, you’re standing out in the ocean on flats as you plan your attack on these intelligent and sensitive fish.
DO IT!!!!!
Be sure to practice casting before you get to Puerto Rico!
You’re in the big leagues of saltwater fly fishing… So be sure to bring your A-game!!! Flats fishing is all about opportunities. Being accurate and quick at distances of 50-60 feet will give you the best chance at feeding these amazing fish!
- Gear -
Travel Creel always recommends that you bring your own equipment, however rods/reels can be provided if needed.
If you need to borrow gear, please be sure to let us know prior to the trip so we can communicate your needs to the team. Email or text Samantha with gear requests.
For permit, 9 ft, 9wt rods are preferred.
A 10wt for smaller class tarpon and an 11 or 12 for bigger tarpon with reels that have a sealed saltwater compatible drag.
Be sure to inspect your gear and make sure that your reels are properly functioning well before your trip!
Permit reels need to be loaded with at least 250 yards of backing.
Tarpon reels with 300-350 yards of backing.
Floating lines are preferred.
Please see the printable planner for a more in depth gear list. If you have any questions at all please reach out to us! Joshua is available for gear questions and discussions anytime!
